Dear Lindsey Families,
It was great seeing so many people at conferences! Did you find any items in our lost and found display?
Wit and Wisdom - Our new ELA curriculum materials have arrived! We've been busy unpacking, sorting, and labeling books. Teachers have started to plan the first unit and are excited to "dig deep" into the books with students. Wit & Wisdom students read and study award-winning fiction and nonfiction texts, famous works of art, videos, photographs, and more. These texts awaken and expand students’ curiosity. Wit & Wisdom students also learn about compelling topics such as the five senses, outer space, the Great Depression, and more. Through their work with these topics and texts, students hone their abilities to read challenging texts and to write and speak clearly, logically, and effectively. Wit & Wisdom students build strong knowledge and skills
Halloween -
Details about Lindsey's Halloween Festivities are further below.
Trick or Treat Street is on Saturday at 5:00 pm. Mrs. Becerra and Mrs. Titgemeier will be passing out candy, and hope to see many students there!
Class Spotlight - A new addition will be added to our newsletters... Class Spotlights! Each newsletter will contain 1-2 pictures of our classrooms in action with a caption written by students.
Attendance is a key focus in our building as we work to inform families about chronic absenteeism, which occurs when a student misses more than 10% of the school year (18 days in a 180-day school year). We will share information on attendance metrics and highlight the critical role that regular attendance plays in supporting students' academic success. This quarter 3rd graders attended school the most, at a rate 96.6%. It was a close race between all 3 grade levels, all above 95%! See the image further below for more details.
4th Grade CogAT - All 2nd grade and 4th grade students' cognitive screening will be on the following dates in November, with the state approved Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
2nd graders: November 18-19
4th graders: November 13-14
Veterans Day - Lindsey's annual Veteran's Day ceremony will be held Monday, November 11th at 9:00am. Lindsey families of attending veterans are welcome. Information was emailed out to families last week, and the flyer is further down in the newsletter. If there is a veteran, or an active service member, in your life, please consider sending in a picture and participating!
Sincerely,
Melissa Becerra, Principal

Next week, I will visit classrooms to present the No Place for Hate Pledge. The No Place for Hate initiative, coordinated by the Anti-Defamation League, focuses on accepting differences, tolerance, inclusion, and respect. Students can sign the pledge and participate in three discussion-based activities promoting a positive school climate. If you prefer for your student to opt out of these activities, please contact Grace Titgemeier at grace.titgemeier@westg.org.
Below is the No Place for Hate Pledge:
I PROMISE to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
I PROMISE to do my best to be kind to everyone - even if they are not like me.
IF I SEE someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher.
EVERYONE should be able to feel safe and happy in school.
I WANT OUR SCHOOL to be No Place for Hate.
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Lindsey Elementary School will celebrate Veterans Day with our annual recognition assembly, slideshow presentation, hallway procession, and reception on Monday, November 11, 2024 at 9:15 AM. We invite local Veterans and their families to attend.
To honor a Veteran in the slideshow that will be shown, please complete the form below to provide their service information, photo and RSVP by October 31, 2024. When sending the picture please refer to the instructions in the google form on labeling, so we have the proper information associated with the photo.
**If you have extra Halloween costumes that you no longer need, we'll gladly take them off of your hands. It's nice to have some extras to share with students who come without a costume and would like to dress up for the parade.
LINDSEY HALLOWEEN PARADE AND PARTIES
Thursday, Oct 31, 2024
Costume Parade: 9:15-9:35 a.m.
Class Parties: 9:45-10:15 a.m. (5th Grade: grade-level party in Gym)
Weather permitting, students will parade outside the perimeter of the Lindsey school building. Families are invited to stand on the front sidewalk. Students will parade on the blacktop, coming out by the band room and walk the length of the sidewalk in the front of the building and return through the art room doors.
In case of inclement weather, guests may enter the front doors and line up around the perimeter of the gymnasium for the parade indoors. Please note, all visitors MUST adhere to the same costume guidelines as students, should adults choose to dress up for the costume parade. Furthermore, all adults must adhere to our WG mask guidance.
Classroom parties will be from 9:45-10:15 a.m. Only the homeroom parent (assigned by PTO) and party helpers arranged by the homeroom parent will be permitted to attend the classroom party. The office staff will have a list of parents who are helping with parties. All helpers MUST sign in.
Please communicate with your child’s homeroom teacher if you do not want your child to participate in the party and parade as an alternate location/activity will be available.
COSTUME GUIDELINES (costumes are optional)
All staff reserve the right to ask students and visitors to change costumes in a manner acceptable for the school. Students are expected to wear a costume compatible with the WG mask guidance.

2. Each person must be easy to identify.
3. Costumes may not include blood, mutilated or severed body parts.

He/she needs to be able to sit comfortably in his/her seat and participate in recess.

7. Total covering of face with hoods is not permitted.
