December 1, 2023
Dear Lindsey Families,
Happy December! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break! The next 2 1/2 weeks will take us to winter break, and will conclude the second quarter of the school year. During this time students will visit the Holiday Shop and will have winter break parties.
Our action continues at Lindsey! We collected 307 pounds of candy for troops. Our December action is collecting and donating books to the Cleveland Kids' Book Bank. We'll be collecting books through December 15th. (A flyer about this is below.)
Reminder about Phones and Watches: Students are permitted cell phones at schools; but they must remain in backpacks all day, and should remain off or in silent mode. If they make it out to recess or during class time, I will take the phone and ask a parent/guardian to pick it up at the office. Students going home sick, or who have a change in dismissal, should be notified through the clinic or office. Many students have watches that text and accept calls. These are very convenient for safety. Watches should not make or accept texts or calls during the school day. Please help us keep students safe on our end, at school, and go through the office for dismissal changes. We keep track of where students are and how they go home. Just call the office if you have changes or concerns. If nobody answers, email Mrs. Clucas at colleen.clucas@westg.org.
Students have been practicing traveling through hallways silently during transitions. Unlike the middle school and high school, classes occur during transitions to lunch, recess, and specials. To keep the learning consistent, we decided to implement silent hallways during transition times. Classes have been practicing for about 2 weeks. After our practice time is over, students who continue to be loud during transitions will spend the first 5 minutes of lunch walking the hallways silently. There's already been a drastic difference is hallway noise levels and decreased interruptions during learning time!
Further down the newsletter you'll see more information and pictures of our Veterans Day Celebration. Additionally, you'll see pictures from the National Blue Ribbon School Ceremony in Washington DC and of our National Blue Ribbon Assembly. This is a Blue Ribbon YEAR, so we'll be celebrating all year!
Sincerely,
Melissa Becerra, Principal

On November 16-17, the 2023 National Blue Ribbon School award was officially handed to Robert C. Lindsey Elementary. Dr. Markwardt, Mrs. Becerra, and Mrs. Bellan traveled to Washington DC to receive the honor from the U.S. Department of Education.
Upon their return, Lindsey Elementary held an all-school assembly to celebrate this outstanding accomplishment. The District purchased a Blue Ribbon shirt for all students and staff, and each student has a mini blue flag which will line the walkways outfront. (The weather was rainy during the assembly, so we'll get them out there soon.) In addition to the Lindsey students and staff, the current 6th grade class returned to take part in the celebration. Additionally, members from the Board of Education and Central Office Administrators attended the celebration, as did the High School Drumline. (Video slideshow of the Award Ceremony in DC)
Each grade level presented a word of an acrostic poem, spelling out National Blue Ribbon Award. The new banner to hang on the front of Lindsey School was unveiled. Students clapped, cheered, and gave high fives to teachers as a special thank you to teachers and staff.

Geauga #1 Dog Contest Winner is a student from Lindsey Elementary! You can read Emilie's essay below.
There is a new "LAST CHANCE CHECK-OUTS" display in the library! There are books that haven't been checked out in a LONG time. Some of them have never been checked out. Students will have a chance to look through them and decide if they want to check any of these books out. There are quite a few gems that are very interesting! Each book will have a note on the cover indicating the last time that it was checked out.
UPDATE: Students LOVE this section! As soon as Mrs. Murry replenishes the section with more last chance check out books, they immediately get checked out!
Lindsey celebrated Veterans Day by planning a ceremony for over 65 veterans and their guests. The ceremony honored veterans through songs performed by students, a video slideshow, a hallways procession, and a reception. What a wonderful event for veterans and for the community! In the last Lindsey Family Newsletter, I shared the video slideshow and promised to share pictures in the next newsletter. A few pictures are below, a picture slideshow including all of the pictures can be found here.
When to keep your student home from school:
Temperature >100.4 (Can return to school when fever free without the use of fever reducing medication for 24 hours)
Vomiting (Can return to school when they have not vomited for 24 hours)
Diarrhea (Can return to school when they have had no diarrhea for 24 hours)
Remember the weather is changing. Please be prepared with the proper clothing to go outside for recess. Make sure that boots, snowpants, hats, gloves and coats all have your students name on them so we can return them if lost.
We now have an abundance of lost clothing, water bottles, lunch boxes, hats and gloves. We will be donating them right after winter break so please take a moment to see if you are missing anything. You can also come to the school to check out the lost in found from 9am to 2pm daily.
Just in time for the holidays, the West Geauga Spirit Shop will be open on Saturday, December 2 from 11:00 - 1:00 near the High School Cafeteria during the Geauga West Rotary Breakfast with Santa event. Stop by for Wolverine gear and to support the Boosters.
