Middle School News

Dear WGMS families:

Spring break has arrived and our students have definitely earned some time off to relax! We finished the third quarter strong and I am proud everything our students and staff have accomplished thus far. Final report cards for quarter 3 will be posted in Infinite Campus on Friday, April 4th at 2:00 PM.

Be sure to check the calendar and save the dates as many important events are coming up over the next several months. We will continue to focus on academic growth and building a strong school community as we head into the final quarter of the school year.

As the weather becomes warmer, we have a few dress code reminders directly out of the WGMS Student-Parent Handbook. Revealing clothing is prohibited, including transparent shirts. Undergarments should not be visible. Shorts are allowed, but must be appropriate and in good taste. Teacher and/or administrative discretion shall determine whether shorts are appropriate. These rules will be enforced.

Have a restful spring break! We will see you back in class on Monday, March 31.

Sincerely,

Meagan Bellan, Principal

Power of the Pen

Congratulations go out to the West Geauga Middle School Power of the Pen teams, coached by Lisa Zimmer! They did awesome on Saturday, March 15th at the regional tournament hosted by Solon Middle School. Other middle school attendees of the competition included Andrews Osborne, Beachwood, Bedford, Chagrin Falls, Chardon, Conneaut, Cornerstone Christian, Eastlake, Fairport Harding, Gross Schechter, Hudson, Jefferson, Kenston, Kirtland, Mandel Jewish, Mayfield, Memorial, Monticello, Notre Dame, Orange, Perry, Revere, Ruffing Montessori, Saint John, Saint Paschal Baylon, Shaker Heights, Shore, Solon, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Mary (Chardon), St. Paul, University, W-E School of Innovation, and Willowick,

We are proud to announce that the seventh grade team came in first place out of 35 teams! The team consists of Cora Duxbury, Slane Synnott, Vanessa Winningham, Hannah Nevar, Collette Johnson, and Lola Franceschini. Individually, two writers snagged first and second place out of the top 12 seventh grade writers. Slane Synnott placed second with only 5 points separating her from first place, which went to Cora Duxbury! Vanessa Winningham was honored for earning a Best of Round at the previous district competition. Her story was selected by the director out of  the 84 stories written as the very best in that round. Finally, the combined scores of the 7th and 8th grade teams were tabulated, which included 8th graders - Ellie Pierson, Cassie Gaskill, and Emma Torer - which landed them in third place.

We celebrated the end of the 3rd Quarter with an all-school assembly basketball competition. Each grade level sent their competitors to the floor with the goal of advancing to the final game to take on their teachers. While the 7th graders advanced to the final game, they were ultimately defeated by the WGMS staff! The gym was filled with so much energy and excitement leading in to spring break!

Students in Mr. Skotzke's 6th grade Science Class made ice cream. The lesson was to investigate the transfer of energy that occurs during a change of state. The ice cream ingredient mixture lost heat energy to the ice/salt mixture, simultaneously causing the ice cream to freeze while the ice/salt mixture melted. The result of the experiment was a tasty treat to enjoy!

Tardy Policy

Please be aware, that we are issuing consequences for unexcused tardiness to school. Each morning, we will track that students are in their first period class ready to learn by 7:25 am. If a student were to earn 3 unexcused tardies, a lunch detention will be issued. Lunch detentions will continue to be issued if a student hits 6 unexcused tardies and at 9 unexcused tardies in the quarter. If a student accumulates 12 or more unexcused tardies to school, an In-School Restriction will be issued. At WGMS, we are aligning our student tardy policy with the student tardy policy at WGHS to establish consistency.  Please reach out to Miss Moeschberger should you have any questions.
