September 6, 2024
The 6th graders had the very best time at the Great Geauga County Fair. One of our very own 6th graders, Gavin Heffron, shared his chicken with Dr. Markwardt to be flown in the annual Chicken Flying Contest against Kenston. West Geauga Middle School was victorious and our trophy is proudly displayed in the office. Thank you, Gavin, for sharing your special chicken!
Please mark your calendars for these important dates:
6th Grade Camp Fitch: May 12-14
7th Grade Day Trip to Downtown Cleveland: May 7
8th Grade Trip to Washington DC: May 21-23. Detailed agenda can be found here!
As the planning for these trips outfolds, the linked websites will be the primary way parents can get all of the details they need about the trip.
On September 9, 2024 beginning at 5:30 pm in the WGMS cafeteria, we will have Jerry from Nowak Tours answer any questions related to both the 7th and 8th grade trips to our families. All materials will be published on a Google Site that families can access to plan for each field trip following this initial meeting so please do not worry if you are unable to join.
On February 12, 2025 at 5:00 pm in the WGMS cafeteria, we will hear from Scott Raines, Camp Director, and a representative from Camp Fitch to hear more details about 6th grade camp.
Curriculum Updates:
During the 24-25 school year, the middle school will be enjoying both class novels as well as enjoying book clubs that allow students to have choice in their reading. Here is a look ahead of the class novels as well as the book clubs that will be occurring throughout the upcoming school year. In 6th grade, at the next board meeting, it will be decided if we will be procuring an additional curriculum resource while would change our book list. In 7th and 8th grade, we could be considering updating our Units of Study which may cause some additions or revisions to the this text list. As changes are made to the text list, families will receive communication. Please reach out to your child’s respective ELA teacher for any questions or concerns.
Second Step: We will continue to use Second Step as our social-emotional learning curriculum K-8. This includes anti-bullying/harassment lessons and will be embedded in social studies classes throughout the school year. For the curriculum scope and sequence, see this document. If you have any questions about the Second Step program or would like to opt your child out of this lesson, please reach out to your building principal, meagan.bellan@westg.org. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.
Reminders:
Students will be permitted to walk to the library after buses have been dismissed per parent discretion. There is no bus that takes students to the library.
The MS bell schedule bell and testing bell schedule can be referenced here.
Picture retakes will occur on October 25th.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Good parent-teacher communication is important for the success of your child. The West Geauga Middle School wishes to promote this communication by providing time for parents to confer individually with any of their child's teachers. This year's conferences will take place on Tuesday, Oct 1 from 5-8 pm and on Thursday, Oct 10 from 5-8 pm.
In order to accomodate all of the parents attending conferences, we are requesting parents with last names starting A-L attend on October 1st, while those with last names starting M-Z attend on October 10. There will be no pre-scheduled conferences and instead parents can have a quick chat with any of their child's teachers whom they wish to meet. These conferences should take about 5 minutes so other families have an opportunity to talk to any of their child's teachers.
Please note: Our Band and Choir teachers will be in attendance at the Middle School on October 1st only.
We ask that students NOT attend these conferences.
Tardy Policy
Please be aware, that we are issuing consequences for unexcused tardiness to school. Each morning, we will track that students are in their first period class ready to learn by 7:25 am. If a student were to earn 3 unexcused tardies, a lunch detention will be issued. Lunch detentions will continue to be issued if a student hits 6 unexcused tardies and at 9 unexcused tardies in the quarter. If a student accumulates 12 or more unexcused tardies to school, an In-School Restriction will be issued. At WGMS, we are aligning our student tardy policy with the student tardy policy at WGHS to establish consistency. Please reach out to Miss Moeschberger should you have any questions.
There will be a grace period until Labor Day, as students learn our new routine and we smooth out traffic patterns.
We are disappointed to announce that the WG Rock the Block party tonight (September 6, 2024) has been CANCELED due to the predicted afternoon thunderstorms. We hope to reschedule on another date soon!
For the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, all 7th grade students are required by the state of Ohio to have proof of one (1) dose of both Meningococcal (MCV4, Menactra), and the Tdap Vaccine on file in the clinic by the fourteenth (14th) day of the new school year. Documentation must be provided and can be a signed note from the physician's office or an immunization summary print out. Proof must include the month, day, and year of both vaccinations.
